I was born at Queens General Hospital, on March 9, 1984, on a stormy, snowy day. My parents are immigrants from Guyana, South America. From the time I was born to about the age of four I lived in Brooklyn, New York. Now I reside in Queens, with my parents and my twelve-year-old sister. My immediate family is small, but my outside family is huge. I didn't get to know most of my outside family until about 5 years ago. When I was in the ages of six through nine, I danced ballet and tap. Thereafter, when I was 12 I learned to dance East/West Indian Cultural Dancing, and had danced that for six years and it's one of my passions to dance and listen to music. I may also try the dancing classes here at Stony Brook as well. All my life I went to public school. Although I had many opportunities and privileges, many of them were limited. Living in the city, we don't get as many funds to improve our labs and things of the sort. We had to make use of the little we had. My advantage, was that I was in the honors program all through kindergarten to the twelfth grade. I did have research opportunities through some of the programs, but it was mainly math research. I've only taken regents physics in high school and I am now taking physics here at Stony Brook. My favorite part of math/science is accomplishing what I set out to do. If I was given a math problem I would like to know that I have finished and it was done correctly. I like a good challenge, like having to build a puzzle that's broken up into 500+ pieces. I find the challenge intriguing, and actually finishing, gives a fulfilling feeling. I've never had anyone influence me in my decision in becoming an Engineering Science major, or anyone to push me into a field like this. In the very beginning I wanted to do something in visual communications, graphic designing, or media fields. I like to create things, and some how I felt I could do so much more in a field like this. I thought it would be cool to design things, but it may be even cooler to build them. Now that I have taken an intro class in engineering, it seems I will stay with this field. Maybe in the future I would get into the visual communication/graphic designing/media field. |
