Biography

I am an upcoming junior at Great Neck North High, where I have already taken AP Calculus and AP Physics in 10th grade. I basically know nothing about lasers and optics yet but I want to use this summer as an opportunity to learn about these fields.

I came to the United States from Korea in 7th grade. During my first two years I had difficulty learning English, but now I am more comfortable with both English and American culture. I try to go back to Korea during my vacations. I am actually going to Korea this August to visit my Dad and my new family home in Korea.

In my spare time I try to read books and watch movies. I am mostly interested in classics (but I am very picky). Although I have writers who I respect tremendously, I haven't read sufficient amount of their works to justify my position in judging their philosophy and calling them my favorites yet. (In other words, I don't deserve to name any, even for good purposes, for my meager reading). My favorite books (from my small repertoire) are Macbeth and Lord of the Flies. My all-time favorite movies are Home Alone (1990) and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), The Shawshank Redemption (1994) and Catch Me If You Can (2002). My favorite cartoon-animation movies are Lady and the Tramp (1955) (especially), Anastasia (1997), Mulan (1998), and a great deal more.

I also love to play piano and listen to music during my free time. Playing the piano is something I am very passionate about, something I do solely for my own satisfaction. I express myself through piano: I put my emotions, including anger, into music. Sergey V. Rachmaninoff is my favorite piano music composer; he is the composer who made me appreciate music. These days I am also interested in music by Dmitri D. Shostakovich and Sergei S. Prokofiev. As much as I listen to classics, I listen to Eminem. My undefeated favorite is The Way I Am (I have its lyrics all covered).
