Detextify is an online tool that lets you draw the mathematical or text symbol that you're thinking of, and it will show you a list of possibilities with their codes. It isn't perfect (and is slightly dependent on your artistic abilities!) but certainly saves a lot of time when you're trying to find certain symbols.
