Hi. I'm Matt Whitrock, and this fall I will be entering my junior year at Kings Park High School. My hobbies include drumming, listening to and writing music, writing, chess, football, soccer, Ultimate Frisbee, and playing videogames. My previous academic experiences in settings outside of school include the SUNY-Old Westbury Young Scholars of Mathematics program level 9-10, which I participated during 8th grade, and the Stanford University EPGY Advanced Topics in geometry course that I took during my freshman-sophomore summer. I first became interested in physics as a freshman, while I was doing an engineering project to create a solar module that could be scaled to power a laptop computer for an indefinite period of time. While studying the operation of the apparatus I began to get interested in the behavior of the light wave, which eventually led me to abandon engineering and instead pursue interests in physics. Optics quickly became my preferred field of study, something I confirmed after visiting Dr. Noe at the Laser Teaching Center. Because my school has a helium-neon laser, I began to develop possible project ideas, which led to my current interest in laser modes. This summer I intend to study more in the area of laser modes and develop a project. |
