Today the Laser Teaching Center students were given a talk by Dominik
Scheble. His group works to conduct experiments on Bose Einstein
Condensates. He explained what the Bose Einstein Condensate is and how to
make it, which was very interesting and understandable. Then he proceeded
to explain what types of experiments can be done, and especially what
kinds he is interested. That was less understanable from my point of view
since he talked about Solid State topics with which I am not familiar
yet. The most I understood was that he is able to create a standing light
wave by reflecting the light from a mirror, and this standing wave can be
used to view diffraction effects in the condensate. It is a very
interesting idea and I wish I could understand more of what he does. He
seems to be a good communicator and educator.
