Today was a sad day for the LTC REU students because we were given
some tragic news.
Last week we found out that
the annual keg run was canceled because someone in the Stony Brook
administration was putting pressure on the department. The keg run, which
is an aspect ofe "weekly keg", is (as far as I understand
it) a race aroudn campus that involves beer. The weekly keg is a gathering
of the physics department on every friday in the summer to relax, drink a
keg of beer, eat some chips, and finish off the week on a good note. The
LTC students have been attending the keg for the past three weeks
religiously.
But the story goes that late into the keg last week
someone called the police, who came around and checked i.d.'s and
proclaimed a keg on campus illegal. So, the weekly keg thus
died. Apparantly, though, cans and bottles are NOT illegal vessels for
alcohol, so the department has applied for a licence for those, which they
are not expecting to receive for three more weeks, which is a significant
percentage of the REU program. Needless to say, everyone is heartbroken.
