One of the first realizations that in analyzing this project was that it was going to be important for me to develop something to raise and lower a laser up and down through the tank. In the bottom of the tank, pure corn syrup had been placed. A diluted form of corn syrup with about 50% water was placed on top of that. On the very top of the tank pure water was placed.
Initially when the laser pointer was shone through the tank it would refract very ordinarilly. Light passing through a different media will refract and bend at a specific angle. This was observed. However if the laser was shone through the tank, hitting the interface perpendicularly, the laser would still refract slightly. I observed that it was very difficult to manipulate the light beam to travel in a straight line. This means that there was no specific point when the substance was uniform. It was always varying.
