National Humanities Center Summer Residency
2026 Call for Submissions
The competition for the 2026 residential fellowship is now closed.
The Humanities Institute at Stony Brook announces a competition for faculty in humanities departments to be selected for a month-long residential fellowship at the National Humanities Center (NHC) in North Carolina in Summer 2027.
Faculty, lecturers and adjuncts with a PhD in a humanities discipline are eligible to apply to be nominated. Chairs of humanities departments may nominate one candidate from their department to stand for the fellowship. A selection committee composed of the Humanities Institute Advisory Board will select up to two (2) nominees from the resulting pool to send to the NHC in North Carolina from June 7-July 2, 2027. Tuition, lodging, and some travel expenses are paid from the fellowship. Travel from the scholar’s home to the NHC is not included. For more details, see the description of the fellowship program on the NHC website.
The cost of the $8,000 fellowship is supported equally through cost sharing between
the Office of the Provost, the College of Arts and Science, the faculty's home department,
and HISB.
Scholars interested in being nominated for the NHC Summer Residency Fellowship should
contact their department chairs and provide the following:
- a one-page project statement
- a current CV
The details for the 2027 NHC Summer Residency Chairs fellowship have not been released but are expected in early October. We do not expect any changes from the 2026 guidelines: department chairs will send the name of the nominee, along with their materials, to HISB. The selected SBU nominee will be notified by late November and their name sent to NHC.
The NHC will send the nominee scholar a unique link to the application portal. Complete applications must be submitted by early 2027 (with the exact date TBD). The 40 residency participants will be competitively selected from this pool of applicants, however as a President’s Circle Sponsor, SBU is guaranteed a spot in the residency if submitted by the deadline.
If you have questions about the application process, please contact HISB Program Coordinator Adrienne Unger at adrienne.unger@stonybrook.edu.

This program is generously sponsored by the Office of the Provost, the College of Arts and Sciences at Stony Brook University and HISB.
