Stony Brook Puts All Hands on Deck for Fire Safety

Live burns, smoke-outs and a community-wide Campus Fire Prevention Day held at Stony Brook University provided students with first-hand experience in how to react to fire emergencies throughout September, October and November.

The safety awareness initiative was led by Residential Risk Managementa Division of the Student Affairs department, in partnership with Environmental Health and Safety.

Students that attended both a live burn event and Campus Fire Prevention Day not only gained valuable safety knowledge, they were also put in the running to win a Dell Inspiron 2-in-1 laptop as part of a random drawing.

During live burnings, students observed how to properly extinguish a kitchen grease fire and witnessed the burning of a simulated residential hall room — half of which was furnished with campus fire-rated furniture and the other half outfitted with non-university-approved furniture. Students also learned about the importance of evacuating immediately, knowing their routes for evacuation, how to use a fire extinguisher, the importance of abiding by the terms of occupancy, and the dangers of smoke inhalation.

Campus Fire Prevention Day was held on Wednesday, October 11, from 10 am to 3 pm at the SAC Plaza. Safety vendors and live demonstrations were part of the event, educating members of the Stony Brook University community about fire safety as well as volunteer opportunities and resources available to the community.

More than 100 students also participated in a smoke-out event in Tabler Quad on November 7. Attendees walked through simulated smoke in the Tabler Arts Center, which was meant to give the experience of what it would be like to navigate a building that is on fire. Students enjoyed educational trivia, free snacks and prizes.

In an emergency, remember to call the University Police immediately at (631) 632-3333 from a mobile phone or 333 from any campus landline.
