The NBA Playoffs tip off on April 14, and Morgan Cato ’04 ’05 is right in the thick of it. Cato, who was honored in January as a Stony Brook “40 Under Forty” alumnus, is in her second year as director of Business Operations, League Operations for the NBA, and her sixth year in the league overall. Cato was honored in absentia, however, as she was part of the group from the league office that traveled to London to oversee the NBA London Game 2018 between the Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers. Before joining the NBA in 2013, Morgan…

For Sabrina Thompson ’07, not even the sky is the limit. As a NASA Engineer, artist and aspiring astronaut, this 40 Under Forty honoree’s skills are as diverse as they are impressive. In her daily work, Thompson designs trajectories, develops mission designs and performs orbit analyses for CubeSat spaceflight missions. Before she found engineering, though, she was enamored by art.  Now, she is working hard to bring together the two worlds she loves. Thompson wants to help young girls foster an early interest in STEM, and she’s using art to pave the way.  In fact, at the core of this…

For Derek Peterson ’88, there’s no puzzle that can’t be solved. With time and thought, every problem has a solution. It’s this way of thinking that led Derek, CEO and Founder of Soter Technologies, to create his Digital Fly product line, which includes a transformative innovation that detects and prevents bullying in public schools worldwide. Thanks in part to the heavy impact of this product, Derek’s work has gained global attention, making him and his work the subject of features on ABC’s Good Morning America, Fox 5 New York, and numerous media outlets throughout the country and around the world.…

For Eboné Carrington ’01, going “Far Beyond” meant taking a trip across the street. After years of overlooking Harlem Hospital from her balcony — and after earning her BS in Business Management at Stony Brook in 2001 — the Harlem native and 40 Under Forty honoree made history in 2016 when she became the Hospital’s youngest-ever CEO at the age of 37. Today, Eboné manages over 2,400 employees and a $200 million budget.  Still, her ties to Harlem Hospital go beyond her own work as CEO. Both of her parents have held positions in the Hospital, making for over 80…

The power of choice was the common theme during the Black History Month opening ceremony — the choice to achieve, to persevere, to love and to rise up — coinciding with Stony Brook’s overarching theme for the month, “Sankofa: Still I Rise.” The opening ceremony is part of an annual program of Black History Month events throughout the month of February, coordinated by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, Black History Month Committee and Department of Africana Studies. This year, the Department of Africana Studies is also celebrating their 50th anniversary as a department at Stony Brook. “At Stony Brook, we’re…

The ranks of black women leading colleges and universities in the U.S. are small, but growing. On October 27, 2017, Stony Brook alumna Barbara Gaba ‘69, PhD added her name to the list when she was sworn in as president of Atlantic Cape Community College in New Jersey, becoming both the first African-American and the first woman to lead the 50-year-old institution.   And, in less than three months, Dr. Gaba has already made significant moves to strengthen the college, bolstering partnerships with area high schools and creating new transfer agreements with four-year colleges and universities in the Garden State. “My…

SBAA Board Member Jaime Moore ’88 Kicks Off The Program as the First Alumnus in Residence Many colleges and universities invite alumni back to campus to speak to classes. At Stony Brook, alumni come to stay for the day for a more personal interaction with students through the new Alumni in Residence program created by the Stony Brook Alumni Association. The program was launched on Wednesday, September 27, in collaboration with Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS), when SBAA board member Jaime Moore ’88 moderated an intimate discussion with students on how identity factors into their educational and professional aspirations. “It was such…

How Stony Brook Pays Off its Promise to Transform Lives Finding ways to enable upward income mobility, one of the defining issues of our time, is a pinnacle of achievement for many institutions of higher learning. Removing the obstacles to a quality education isn’t just a moral mandate for colleges and universities — it’s become a necessity. A Stony Brook University education provides a proven path toward upward income mobility for students from low-income households, according to a new study led by the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. Entitled Mobility Report Cards: The Role of Colleges in Intergenerational Mobility,…
