Step-by-Step Process
Follow this step-by-step guide from application through arrival to ensure an easy
transition to your GSI program!
Step 1: Select a Program
Select a program that meets your interests and goals
Step 2: Apply for a Program
Submit the Application
Submit the application for your program and on campus housing.
Commit to the Program
Once accepted to your GSI program, you will receive an email asking you to "Commit"
to the program in your application portal.
Set up your Technology Accounts
You will receive a Stony Brook ID number and be asked to create a login to your student technology accounts.
Request an I-20
Global Academic and Intensive English Programs only. You will receive an email from
Visa & Immigration Services to request an I-20 for your student visa.
Make a Deposit
Intensive English Program only. You will be asked to make a non-refundable deposit
of $200 to confirm your participation. You will receive an email with payment instructions.
Step 3: Apply for a Visa
Learn Your Visa Requirements
Determine which visa is required for your program and apply for the visa at your nearest U.S. Consulate.
Step 4: Make Flight Arrangements
Check Important Dates!
Review housing check-in and check-out dates and airport transportation information prior to making flight arrangements.
Step 5: Make a Payment
Check Your SOLAR Account
All tuition and fees must be paid in full two weeks before the program begins. Some charges and scholarships may not be applied until a later date. Check your SOLAR account on the first day of class to make sure all fees are paid.
Step 6: Pack for Your Trip

Step 7: Travel to Campus
Transportation from Local Airports and NYC
Find transportation options to campus based on your starting point and review housing check-in dates, times, and location.
Step 8: Attend Orientation
Everything You Need To Know for Summer
Check-in with GSI and get important information about your program, the campus, and GSI activities during Orientation. Exact times and locations will be emailed to you and will be posted in your application portal.
Step 9: Enjoy the Program!
Connect with GSAs and Events
Take advantage of GSI cultural activities and meet up with your Global Student Ambassador.
