Dr. Brown uses a variety of biomarkers to test whether and how helping behavior in humans enhances longevity. Her research has identified personal, interpersonal, and situational factors that unlock authentic caring behavior that is regulated within the brain, and releases hormones that protect the helper’s immune system. Her current work uses this information to identify ways that the physical environment and the social context can be used to prime activation of these “helping” neural circuits. She is currently studying caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients to identify ways to help people in this circumstance.
