The Women’s and Gender Studies Program of the Department of Cultural Analysis and Theory at Stony Brook University is dedicated to the continued evolution of the field as a site for innovative research on the complex interplays of gender, race, class, and sexuality in the production and organization of social life in the transnational context. Women’s and Gender Studies is interested in how power works, both in terms of how societies, their cultures, and political institutions are organized, and also in how knowledge is produced and disseminated in the academy and beyond. As a relatively new field, Women’s and Gender Studies has contributed to the creation of new methodologies and theories that have had led to the transformation of traditional disciplines in the social sciences and the humanities. Women’s and Gender Studies at Stony Brook collaborates with established disciplines in the ongoing invention of interdisciplinary forms of scholarship and teaching, and demonstrates research strengths in interdisciplinary methods, feminist and queer theories, transnational social movements, and the politics and practices of health.

Through interactive small classroom environments Women’s and Gender Studies offers students—at the undergraduate and graduate level—a site for critical thinking and reflection while also introducing them to a wide range of research methodologies and analytical skills. These skills provide students with excellent preparation for other classes, community engagement, graduate studies and their professional careers.
