WLC Virtual Tour of the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis,
Tennessee, April 26th 2021
For the 2021 spring semester, the Women's Leadership Council took a virtual tour of
the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. Mentors
and mentees explored the exhibits, which showcased the instrumental events and activists
during the Civil Rights Movement in America, and connected the era to the Black Lives
Matter Movement. The tour included Freedom Rides, Student Non-Violent Coordinating
Committee (SNCC), sit-in movement, Fannie Lou Hamer, Black Panther Party, and more.
The council viewed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s room in the Lorraine Motel, where
he was assassinated on April 4, 1968. At the end of the tour, the women reflected
on the accomplishments of the Civil Rights Movement and the next steps that need to
be taken to achieve equality and freedom.
