Internship Opportunities

Founded in 2002 as an Asian and Asian American Cultural Center, the Charles B. Wang Center offers public programs and exhibitions that reflect both traditional and contemporary Asian and Asian American cultures and societies. These programs include exhibitions, films, lectures, workshops, performances, and educational discussions.

Central to the Charles B. Wang Center's mission is the encouragement of an ever-deeper understanding and enjoyment of Asian and Asian American arts and culture by diverse local, national and international audiences. These audiences are composed of students, faculty, artists, scholars and general public members of the Stony Brook community that the Center serves.

The Charles B. Wang Center seeks interns to support our public programs and exhibitions. Applicants should have an interest in Asian and Asian American culture and issues.

Qualifications:

  • Interest or academic background in Asian & Asian American Studies, History, Art History, Fine Arts, Design, Education
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong research skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Knowledge of Asian and Asian American contemporary culture preferred
  • Availability for evening and weekend programs helpful

Schedule:

Internships are unpaid positions. Candidates are required to commit to a minimum of 12 weeks, and one to three days per week, or the equivalent of 8-20 hours per week; evening availability once or twice a month for events. Class credit available through the intern’s academic department.

Charles B. Wang Center Internship Openings

Social Media Intern:

Develop professional Public Relations and Digital Marketing skills and manage social media communication with campus and community. Assist in program promotion through social media and email campaigns. Work closely with the Cultural Programs department to build an audience and a strong social media presence.

Preferred Skills:

  • Proficient in using social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Instagram and YouTube and proven creativity in disseminating information through social media.
  • Ability to learn, develop and execute a social media plan for the season’s programs.

 

Public Relations & Communications Intern:

Gain experience in Public Relations and Communications and research campus and community outlets to promote programs. Prepare promotional materials for upcoming programs. Distribute brochures and flyers to both campus and community. Assist with administrative support for Cultural Programs department. Track press coverage for the Charles B. Wang Center programs in campus and local news outlets.

Preferred Skills:

  • Strong Research and Design skills
  • Familiarity with Photoshop, InDesign, Website development and PowerPoint

 

Public Programs Intern:

Learn event planning and conduct program and development research. Assist in the preparation and presentation of public programs. Monitor the exhibition and the program registration desk for public programs and special events. Provide administrative support to Cultural Programs department. Evaluate audience attendance through compilation of survey data.

Preferred Skills:

  • Versatile research skills
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Strong organizational skills

 

Exhibition Installation Intern:

Build skills and knowledge in exhibition installation and assist in installation and maintenance of exhibitions for the season.

Preferred Skills:

  • Familiarity with exhibition installation and basic use of tools
  • Willing to learn hands-on skills
  • Art major

 

Photo and Video Journalism Intern:

Gain experience in photo and video journalism by covering the Cultural Programs at the Charles B. Wang Center and create photo documentation and video promotional pieces including photographing exhibitions and interviewing guests and presenters.

Preferred Skills:

  • Ability to edit video and photos
  • Access to video and photo editing programs
  • Journalism or Art major 
  • Media Arts minor
