Requesting a Form I-20 or DS-2019

International Students admitted into a full-time academic program at Stony Brook University must obtain a Certificate of Eligibility to enter and/or re-enter the U.S. in F-1 Student or J-1 Exchange Visitor status. This applies to new students and transfer students from another U.S. university, college or high school. Students returning from a leave of absence must also have a Form I-20 or DS-2019 to return/remain in the United States. The procedures for requesting a Form I-20 / DS-2019 differs depending on academic level and Visa type, please read the following instructions carefully:

Fall Applicants: I-20/DS-2019 request will be available in accessVIS on March 1st.
Spring Applicants: I-20/DS-2019 request will be available in accessVIS on October 1st.
Summer Applicants: I-20/DS-2019 request will be available in accessVIS on March 1st.

Undergraduate Students

Four to six months before the beginning of each new semester, the VIS office will email all applicants with instructions on how to request a Form I-20. This will include an accessVIS Limited Services PIN. Students can request an I-20 prior to receiving admission to Stony Brook, however only admitted students who have paid their deposit are eligible to receive a Form I-20.

  • Log in to accessVIS Limited Services using your Stony Brook ID, Date of Birth, and PIN. Complete all forms listed under the "Request a Form I-20/DS-2019" tab.

  • Upon admission to Stony Brook, pay your deposit and international student fee in SOLAR. Be sure to also complete your New Student Preferences.

  • Your request will then be reviewed by an international student advisor. If your request is approved, your Form I-20 will be processed and mailed to you via UPS Express.

Students transferring from another U.S. institution (college, university, or high school) should visit our Transfer In page.

 

Graduate Students

Four to six months before the beginning of each new semester, the VIS office will email all applicants with instructions on how to request a Form I-20. Students can request an I-20 prior to receiving admission to Stony Brook, however only admitted students who have paid their deposit are eligible to receive a Form I-20.  Students who might be eligible for university funding (TA, RA, PhD, etc.) should wait until they are admitted to request a Form I-20.

  • Log in to accessVIS Limited Services using your Stony Brook ID, Date of Birth, and PIN. Complete all forms listed under the "Request a Form I-20/DS-2019" tab.
  • Graduate students will need to be admitted by both their Academic Department and the Graduate School before an Form I-20 can be issued.
  • Your request will then be reviewed by an international student advisor. If your request is approved, your Form I-20 will be processed and mailed to you via UPS Express.

Exchange Students

  • Log in to accessVIS Limited Services using your Stony Brook ID, Date of Birth, and PIN. Complete all forms listed under the "Request a Form I-20/DS-2019" tab.

  • The Study Abroad & Exchange Office will coordinate your admission to Stony Brook

  • Your request will then be reviewed by an international student advisor. If your request is approved, your DS-2019 will be processed and mailed to your home institution.
 
Deadlines

Spring Admits: Requests for Form I-20/DS-2019 must submitted in accessVIS by December 15th
Summer Admits: Requests for Form I-20/DS-2019 must submitted in accessVIS by April 15th
Fall Admits: Requests for Form I-20/DS-2019 must submitted in accessVIS by June 15th
