Readmission following a Leave of Absence

Readmission applies to students who have taken a leave of absence from Stony Brook University due to medical leave, military duty, or other reasons.  Students should begin the process to request an I-20 for readmission at least 3 months prior to the semester they wish to return.  

If you have been outside of the United States for more than 5 months, you must request a new I-20 from Visa & Immigration Services and apply for a new F-1 visa.  Be advised that you cannot re-enter the U.S. with your old Form I-20.  You must apply for the new F-1 visa at the U.S. Consulate in your country and pay the $200 SEVIS fee online.

 

Undergraduate Students Applying for Readmission

  1. Contact the Registrar's Office to find out if you are required to rematriculate for the upcoming semester.  If so, you will need to complete the Undergraduate Rematriculation form found on the Registrar's website.
  2. Contact your Academic Adviser from your department in order to be readmitted to your program of study.

  3. Fill out the top portion of the Academic Progress Review Form.  Scan and email Section I to your academic adviser, and Section II to your major academic department. This form is required in order for VIS to issue your I-20.

  4. Register for a minimum of 12 credits for the upcoming semester.  If returning for the summer term, you must register for at least 6 credits for summer session I & II. 

  5. Complete and submit the Readmission Following Leave of Absence request in accessVIS, uploading proof of sufficient financial sponsorship for the remainder of your program. If your Net ID has expired, you'll need to request a Limited Services PIN.

ImportantOnly once all of the required steps have been completed and you have registered full-time for the upcoming term can a Form I-20 be issued.

 

Graduate Students Applying for Readmission

  1. Complete and submit the Readmission Form for Graduate Students to your Graduate Program Director for approval.  

  2. Register full-time for the upcoming semester.  If returning for the summer term, you must register for at least 6 credits for summer session I & II.

  3. Complete and submit the Readmission Following Leave of Absence request in accessVIS, uploading proof of sufficient financial sponsorship for the remainder of your program. If your Net ID has expired, you'll need to request a Limited Services PIN.

ImportantOnly once all of the required steps have been completed and you have registered full-time for the upcoming term can a Form I-20 be issued.
