Host Family Program
The Host Family Program is an excellent way for new international students and families from the Stony Brook community to connect and foster a casual, social relationship. The purpose of a Host Family is to provide a warm welcome for international students that extends into the community beyond the scope of Stony Brook University. This is also a great opportunity for families to have an intercultural experience without leaving home!
The relationship a student and host family develops is ultimately up to them and can take a variety of forms. This could include family dinners, phone calls, attending cultural events, going to sporting events, visiting unique destinations on Long Island or in the city, and more. Many families and international students enjoy the mutually beneficial relationship that occurs through fun activities shared together.
It is our hope that host families and international students remain connected for at least the first year a student attends SBU; however, host families and students may continue to meet beyond the first year. Often times students and families maintain their friendship even past graduation.
We encourage families to meet with their student(s) at least twice a semester. However, we invite Host Families and international students to determine what works best for them.
Due to the nature of the program, Host Families do NOT provide financial assistance or housing to international students. Aspects of a student’s well being should be directed to the appropriate university resource
