Prospective Students

Welcome Prospective Scholar!

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about the University Scholars Program at Stony Brook University. We are very excited about the unique program we have to offer high achieving students at Stony Brook. As you probably are aware already, Stony Brook University is a thriving campus that has something for everyone. Whether you are into sports, enjoy music, or would like to pick up an additional language, Stony Brook has it. What better way to jump into a new environment than with the help of a smaller community on campus that shares your academic goals.

The mission of the University Scholars Program is to provide a vibrant and intellectually stimulating community for high-achieving students in order to assist them in getting the most out their Stony Brook experience.  The program actively encourages and promotes academic excellence; provides opportunities for leadership, professional development, and undergraduate research; as well as outreach activities.  Scholars are expected to maintain academic excellence and integrity; actively participate in the life of the University through programming and events; and help improve the educational environment for all students.  University Scholars receive several benefits, including personalized academic advising over the course of their time at Stony Brook; the opportunity to attend special receptions, workshops and trips hosted by the program; and priority course registration within their academic year.

Who are the University Scholars?

Admission directly into the University Scholars Program as a freshman is through invitation only. Offers are made to incoming freshmen with exceptional academic performance. All high-achieving freshmen are considered, but students can submit a supplemental essay expressing why they want to join the program in order to receive priority consideration. The Scholars generally represent the top 7% of the incoming freshmen, based upon high school GPA and SAT scores. There are approximately 250 Scholars admitted each Fall. Continuing students at Stony Brook (first semester sophomores through first semester juniors), with an exceptional academic record and high levels of demonstrated leadership and involvement on-campus, may request consideration to join the Scholars Program, however acceptance is extremely competitive and contingent upon a clear judicial check and a grade review.  In order to apply, please send an e-mail containing a resume, and letter of intent (indicating why you want to join the Program, what you believe you can bring to it, and what you hope to get out of it) to jeremy.marchese@stonybrook.edu.  For consideration, all materials must be received at least two weeks prior to the start of classes for the semester for which you wish to join in order to allow enough time to review materials and perform the necessary judicial check.

Scholars' Bragging Rights

University Scholars hold a variety of leadership positions here at Stony Brook, and have received recognition for their accomplishments. As of this current academic year 12 University Scholars are Student Ambassadors (selection for this program is extremely competitive); 17 Scholars received the Undergraduate Recognition Award; 7 Scholars received the Provost's Award for Academic Excellence; and 4 Scholars received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence (the highest award granted by the SUNY system).

93 Scholars are graduating in May 2016 with honors; 542 Scholars have GPAs of 3.5 or higher; 314 Scholars have GPAs of 3.75 or higher; and 42 Scholars have a perfect 4.0 GPA.
