College Fellows Program

The Undergraduate Colleges provide an opportunity for motivated emerging leaders to become Undergraduate College Fellows and serve as peer mentors in their in their sophomore year. Upon acceptance into the program, prospective Fellows enroll in the Undergraduate College Fellows Seminar during the spring semester of their freshman year. Following completion of the seminar, students are fully recognized as Undergraduate College Fellows and participate in welcoming the next class of freshman students at Orientation, Opening, and in the First-Year Seminars. Fellows serve as Teaching Assistants for the Freshman Seminar 101 and are required to register for a Fall Teaching Practicum.

If someone asked me to sum up my Undergraduate College Fellows experience into one word, I would have to say transformative. Prior to being a fellow, I had a hard time adjusting to college life. The stress of being away from home for so long and the new expectations and demands of college life became a lot to handle. I would not have applied to the Fellows program had it not been for my SSO 101 instructor, Patricia Bremer, who saw something in me that I had yet to see in myself. For which, I will always be grateful. Through the Fellows training class, I became more confident in my leadership abilities. I learned how best to reach and connect with students of diverse backgrounds. I also was able to establish very strong, genuine, and lasting friendships. The other fellows in my cohort not only shared similar interests as me academically, but they also shared very similar personal goals as well. We quickly bonded into a very tight-knit family, being there for one another inside and outside of class. That sense of community better connected me to Stony Brook University (SBU) and drastically improved my freshmen college experience. Being a fellow also motivated me to get involved with other activities around campus. I was truly able to recognize the impact and contributions I was providing to better campus life.

When the fall semester arrived and I began my teaching assistant position, I realized that being a fellow was definitely well worth it. This is the part of the job that impacted me the most. It was an incredible feeling knowing that my students trusted in me enough to confide in me and look to me for guidance through their first semester at Stony Brook. In addition to that, being a fellow was an awesome networking experience that allowed me to meet so many people that I still keep in touch with today. I had the pleasure of working with such a phenomenal instructor and that was another influential relationship that I formed through being a fellow.

My ACH 101 instructor David Iboy and my Fellow, Jules came to me with the suggestion of applying to become a fellow. Fast forward to the end of the semester and I got selected. “They must have made a mistake somewhere… me? Come on.” Despite this bit of doubt I went with it, and it turned out to be, all clichés aside, one of the most amazing things that ever happened to me. Being a Fellow doesn't so much change you as it does magnify a part of your character that was always there but not visible. Even in my ACH 275 class, I was unsure of myself and what I was doing or even if I deserved this position, but we all get picked for a reason. For me, I discovered this in the fall as I TA’d for my ACH 101 class.
