Students applying for scholarships should consider that the awards may offset thier overall cost of participation (tuition, program fee, flight, living expenses, etc) but should not expect to be awarded enough to cover their full program participation cost. We urge students to consider this when applying to their program of interest as they should expect out of pocket expenses and/or the need to obtain loans and/or financial aid.

IAP Study Abroad Scholarship

  The Study Abroad Office at Stony Brook University has developed an award for high-achieving students to help offset the cost of study abroad.
  Awards range from $500-$3000!

  Eligibility:
  • Must be a matriculated SBU student attending an SBU study abroad program.
  • Must be receiving at least: 3 credits in winter, 6 credits in summer or 12 credits during the semester.
  • Must have submitted the study abroad application (located on our website, • under the “Apply” tab on all program pages) by the deadline of this scholarship.
  
  Requirements:
  • Scholarship recipients are required to provide the Study Abroad Office with pictures of their program. Pictures can be of you, a group of students, conducting field work/research, a landscape, landmark and more!
  Winter/Summer: Provide 10 photos half-way through and at their program’s conclusion 
  Semester: Provide 5 photos on the 1st of each month
  • Recipients may also be asked to speak at a panel discussion, information session, Study Abroad Fair or be featured on an IAP or SBU Instagram page
  
  Notes:
  •  Scholarships are awarded based on total program cost to the individual and academic performance
  •  Specific funding has been allocated for Freshman, EOP, Transfer and  Athletes - these students are encouraged to apply!
  •  In order to apply, students must submit a statement of purpose outlining how these funds and their experience abroad will contribute to their future career in addition to a series of questions regarding their student status. 

   

  Since 2016, we have awarded over $250,000 through this scholarship fund!

Bill Arens Study Abroad Scholarship

  The Bill Arens Scholarship is in memory of Dr. William Arens, former Anthropology Faculty member and Dean of International Academic Programs. His research in East Africa sparked the start of the Academic Safari study abroad program in Tanzania. This scholarship has been created by his family to support students who will study abroad in East Africa through Stony Brook University.

  • Must be a matriculated SBU student attending an SBU study abroad program with at least a GPA of 3.0.

IAP Instagram Raffle

  Eligibility requirements:
  - Matriculated undergraduate Stony Brook University students only 
  - Funds can only be applied toward the study abroad program fee. If the $500 raffle exceeds the program fee, only the amount of the program fee can be awarded 
  - Students can not apply more than one $500 raffle reward to a program but can apply two rewards toward two different programs 
  - The $500 raffle award cannot be transferred to another student 
  - Raffle award only applies to matriculated SBU students participating on SBU study abroad programs 

 

Edward Guiliano '78 Global Fellowship

  Offers awards for study abroad to U.S. citizen students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2 year or 4 year college or university. Selected by competition, recipients are awarded up to $5000 to defray the costs associated with studying abroad.

The Mario Mignone Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria: U.S Citizens or Permanent Residents. Matriculated students. Two semesters of an Italian language courses required.

  Florence University of the Arts (FUA) will offer a one semester scholarship to a deserving student participating in Stony Brook University’s FUA Spring 2023 program. The scholarship will be applied to your Stony Brook University program fee.

  While enrolled at FUA, the selected recipient will serve as the Stony Brook University Student Representative working in collaboration with the resident director in the Student Life and Development Office. The student will assist in promoting student services and SBU activities,  collect student testimonials and photos and will be responsible for the production of the SBU booklet.

  Focuses on geographical areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. Emphasized world regions include Africa, Asia, Central Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean. Study of a foreign language appropriate to the identified country must be part of each proposal.

Study Abroad in Japan Bridging Scholarships

  The Bridging Scholarship for Study Abroad in Japan aids undergraduates majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. Applicants must be a US citizen or permanent resident and be enrolled as an undergraduate in a college or university in the US.

The Mariolein Rijssenbeek Study Abroad Award

Country/Region:  France
Amount: Up to $2,000 
Eligibility Criteria:  Declared French major and cumulative GPA of 3.0

  The Mariolein Rijssenbeek Study Abroad Award is a scholarship that encourages and supports French majors to go and study French language and culture in any Francophone destination. Priority is given (but not limited) to applicants to semester-long programs. Available financial aid amounts $2,000 and may be broken down and shared between several candidates.
  
  Application requirements are as follows:
  - declared major in French
  -  overall GPA minimum of 3.00 
  - one recommendation from a former (not current) French professor
  -  personal statement of intent

  The application deadline is April 1st. Dossiers must be sent to the French Advisor, Dr. Franck Dalmas at franck.dalmas@stonybrook.edu. 

 

 

Baden-Wuerttemberg Stiftung Scholarship

Country/Region: Germany
Amount:€700 each month during program
Eligibility Criteria:

  The state of Baden-Wuerttemberg is providing a Stony Brook University student that is studying at the Universität Konstanz for their spring semester. The scholarship amounts to 700 € each month for one semester. 
  
  Deadlines:
  Fall: March 1 
  Spring: October 1 
  
  Eligibility: 
  - Must be a matriculated SBU student participating on the Universität Konstanz study abroad program 
  - Must have at least a 3.0 GPA 
  - Student must study at Konstanz University during their spring semester (March/April-July)
  
  Note: As the Universität Konstanz fall semester directly conflicts with the start date of SBU’s spring semester start, students are only permitted to participate in this program during the spring semester. Accommodations cannot be made for students to depart their program early due to this conflict. Exceptions can only be made for students who are studying abroad during their last semester at SBU. 

 

Financial Aid

A primary concern of students considering an overseas experience is cost. Therefore it is important to note that students can take advantage of SUNY tuition and apply their financial aid to an overseas experience. Speak with a financial aid advisor at your home campus to discuss how aid applies to overseas programs.

Note:

SBU does not issue paper bills. All billing is conducted through the SOLAR system. Students are responsible for paying their bill prior to departure. SBU students on other SUNY programs will be billed for tuition at Stony Brook University.
