What is the Post 9/11 GI Bill?

The Post 9/11 GI Bill is a new education benefit program for individuals who served on active duty on or after September 11, 2001. The benefits are payable for training pursued on or after August 1, 2009. No payments can be made under this program for training pursued before that date.

 Based on your length of active duty service, you are entitled to a certain percentage of the maximum payable benefits. These percentages are as follows:

Individuals serving an aggregate period of active duty after September 10, 2001, of: Percentage of Maximum Benefit Payable
At least 36 months 100
At least 30 continuous days and discharged due to service-connected disability 100
At least 30 months < 36 months 90
At least 24 months < 30 months 80
At least 18 months < 24 months 70
At least 12 months < 18 months 60
At least 6 months < 12 months 50
At least 90 days < 6 months 40

Am I eligible?

The Post 9/11 GI Bill is for individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service on or after September 11, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 continuous days. You must have received an honorable discharge to be eligible for the Post 9/11 GI Bill. The Post 9/11 GI Bill will become effective for training on or after August 1, 2009.

How can you apply?

You will need to bring the following documents to the Office of Veterans Affairs (Administration Building, Room 348):

Your unit will give you a copy of your DD Form 214. You will need to fill out the VA Form 22-1990, and the SBU VA Form. These documents, along with a copy of your current class schedule need to be submitted to the Office of Veterans Affairs.

Note: You must verify your enrollment the last day of every month during the semester you are certified for benefits. Failure to verify will result in failure to receive payment from the VA.
