  Waivers for this insurance plan are approved only if the student already has alternate health insurance in place and completes a waiver online (on SOLAR) prior to the start of the semester. Your alternate insurance must meet the following requirements:

  • Your alternate insurance plan will be in effect for the entire academic year (or through the completion date of your academic program)
  • Your alternate health plan must cover inpatient and outpatient medical care, prescription coverage and mental health care coverage within 75 miles of Stony Brook University, including routine, urgent and emergency care (emergency-only coverage does not satisfy this requirement)
  • Your alternate health plan must be provided by an insurance company based in the United States and that is compliant with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Short-Term, limited duration plans do not satisfy this requirement.)
  • If you are waiving this plan with a Medicaid Insurance Card, in order for your waiver to be accepted, it must be a Medicaid Plan that was established in NY State and must provide active, in-network coverage. (Out of state Medicaid Plans will not be accepted)

  Deadlines

  You must complete a waiver at the beginning of EACH academic year, by the first day of classes. If you are an incoming student beginning in the Spring semester, submit a waiver by the first day of Spring classes.* However, if you lose your alternative insurance coverage at any time, you should contact the Student Health Insurance Office immediately.

  *If an exception is made to the late waiver policy, there will be a minimum insurance charge of $31.25 applied to your SOLAR account.

  Gaps in health insurance coverage are not permitted.  Please contact the Student Health Insurance Office at (631) 632-6054, by e-mail at studenthealthinsurance@stonybrook.edu.

  To file a waiver the student must go to the SOLAR main page, and click on "Campus Financial Services," and then "Required Insurance/Waiver." Waivers will not be accepted after the deadline. All waivers will be verified by our insurance broker (Haylor, Freyer and Coon).

  If our broker is unable to verify your insurance information you will receive an email from student@haylor.com requesting additional information. The FSA student services office will also send you an email to let you know your current waiver was denied. If you were denied because you have an Out of State Medicaid plan and you are living at home, taking all of your classes online, the FSA Services Office will override the denial and approve your waiver.

  The past year has been unprecedented and we all have had to make extraordinary accommodations due to the pandemic.

  This is to remind all SUNY students that have physically come back to the USA and to their campus that they must be re-enrolled into the SUNY Student Health Insurance Plan for your own wellbeing and medical protection.  This means if you were physically in the USA for the fall, spring or summer, you must re-establish your health insurance plan by contacting studenthealthinsurance@stonybrook.edu upon your arrival. This is a SUNY system requirement, not an option. (Teaching Assistants, Research Assistants and Grad Assistants that are currently enrolled in the employee benefits insurance can disregard this.)

  Undergraduate International students with domestic health insurance coverage who wish to waive insurance should go to haylor.com/college/stony-brook-university to fill out a waiver.

  If you need a waiver because you are studying in your home country for an entire semester, please complete this waiver form by the first day of classes. No waivers will be considered after the deadline.

  GRAD STUDENTS Please Note: If you have an insurance hold in SOLAR, filling out this form will not remove the hold. Please go into your SOLAR account under Campus Financial Services, Required Insurance/Waiver, pick you will be a full time student and pick you have your own insurance. Under provider enter Not Found, subscriber ID# enter your Stony Brook ID# and your name for who hold coverage and self.

  Any Medicaid plans based outside of NY and the NY state Essential Plan will not be accepted. The following plans will not be accepted:

Denial Appeals Policy

The Student Services office makes the initial determination if a student’s alternative coverage is sufficient to qualify for a waiver. The determination is made on the basis of the information provided in the online waiver; however additional documentation may be requested of the student.

Payment of the SUNY Stony Brook Infirmary Fee—Required
The fee covers comprehensive health services for both medical and mental health problems, for students and visiting scholars. It is not a substitute for health insurance. The Student Health Service building is the only location on campus where the mandatory health fee can be used. Medical Services that are beyond the scope of the Student Health Service can be obtained either at University Hospital Medical Center or through other medical providers in the community. However, the infirmary fee will not cover the cost of any medical services outside the Student Health Service Building. Call (631) 632-6740 for further information.
