My name is Monique Beason and I am currently the Residence Hall Director for Irving College in Mendelsohn Quad at Stony Brook University. I have been working here for about 6 months and it has truly been a learning experience for me. The transition and the support coming into the position as a new professional at Stony Brook was wonderful. I was assigned a buddy from my Quad named Holli that assisted me in my transition, move, and any questions I had. I especially loved the fact that all the new professional staff was able to come to campus early before all professional staff training. It gave us to time explore and get to know on our buildings, the campus, the department, quad staff & protocol/procedures, campus partners that works closely with the department, as well as connect other staff members. I would definitely say that with overseeing a large staff, UGC Spirit Committee, Mendelsohn Quad Council Advisor, and etc. has really granted me the opportunity to step out of comfort and grow professionally. In addition, to the support and encouragement that i receive form my peers, supervisors, and CHIME constantly have me reflect on where I am, where I want to be and determining the set of goals to achieve the success I want to see in my life professionally. Overall, it has been great learning experience thus far and I am excited for continued journey at Stony Brook University in the Department of Campus Residences.
In my year as an Area Coordinator, I have had the chance to work with a talented network of professionals within our department, all of whom bring a fresh and exciting perspective to what we do. We are a department that continuously strives to better what we do for our students, year after year. After previously working a small school, I have enjoyed the opportunities that come with working within a larger department. If you have a passion for something, there is likely an avenue here to explore it! No matter where you work on campus, there is still a genuine sense of family and support. Stony Brook University has become home!
What I have enjoyed most about being an Assistant Director is that each day is never the same. After all the years in my position, I have continued to be challenged with new opportunities and evolving focuses within our profession. Our department is committed to self-improvement and innovation. In addition, as a Student Affairs professional working in housing services, I have been able to collaborate with a multitude of areas across the Division and the University. I am proud that our department has gained the respect of colleagues within Student Affairs and Academic Affairs.
I personally feel that responsibility is a core value that is infused with my work daily through the Residence Hall Director role at Stony Brook University. In order to be a student centered administrator I need to prioritize tasks and ensure that I am answering students questions and acting as a responsible resource to them at all times. Our students depend on us here at Stony Brook and we aid them in their development! In order to fulfill my role I need my students to depend on me, and in order to gain their trust I need to be responsible and get them connected to the resources that they need to be successful here. Yes being a responsible employee means working late at times and the hours are long but watching the students grow, develop and reach their goals makes it all worth it!!
