Concerned About My Student

The Family Services and Support Team is your direct contact anytime you have concerns about your student. If there is an emergency after office hours, please call University Police at (631) 632-3333, but for non-emergency concerns please reach out to the Family Services and Support Team at (631) 632-6700.

Many campus offices are not able to speak with family members due to privacy concerns, so they redirect families back to their students. The Family Services and Support Team is aware there may be times when a family member just needs to talk over a concern about their child, with the intention of gaining a better understanding of the situation and resources that may be available. The Family Services and Support Team partners with family members in working toward student success.

Students may face unforeseen obstacles while at Stony Brook, which may interfere with their ability to perform academically, such as a death of a family member, illness, or changes in mood. A conversation with the Family Services and Support Team often can guide the family  through their concerns without violating student privacy law.

Family members are encouraged to refer their students to the Student Support Team as a one-stop-shop for campus resources and a liaison between the student and other campus offices.
