Step 2: Band Personnel Announced

Applications for Spirit of Stony Brook #19 will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
Membership announcements will be emailed within one week of application to the band.

We cannot guarantee early move-in housing for applications received after Friday, July 15th, 2024, at 12 Noon EDT.
Information regarding Early Move-In and Preseason will be communicated via email in mid-July.

Step 4: Attend Preseason

Preseason rehearsals (band camp) will begin with Early Move-In for Drumline and Color Guard on Thursday, August 15th, 2024 and Early Move-In for all Wind players on Sunday, August 18th, 2024.

Each year, The Spirit of Stony Brook is comprised of approximately 200 band members. Both Returning and Prospective new band members must complete the online application (available here) for the band every year. Instrumentation consists of piccolo/flute, clarinet, alto and tenor saxophone, trumpet, mellophone, trombone, baritone/euphonium, sousaphone, marching percussion (snare [traditional grip], tenors, bass, cymbals; we do not have a pit / front ensemble), color guard (flags only), and one featured twirler. If you have experience on any of these instruments, and a positive attitude and willingness to work hard, your chances of becoming a member of The Spirit of Stony Brook are high. You do NOT have to be a music major!

During both the fall and spring semesters, The Spirit of Stony Brook rehearses 2-3 days per week: Mondays from 7:00pm to 9:00pm, Thursdays from 7:00pm to 9:00pm, and select Fridays (usually on home football game weeks) from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. Most members agree the time commitment is not nearly as demanding as it was in their high school marching band.
The Spirit of Stony Brook is a one-credit-hour letter-graded ensemble course in both fall and spring semesters. Members of the band must register for MUS 268 on the Stony Brook University SOLAR system.
Minimal! Stony Brook University covers the majority of our expenses throughout the school year. Band members are provided with uniforms, large instruments, music, and a full compliment of Spirit of Stony Brook gear, including a band polo, backpack, band t-shirts, baseball cap, and a water jug. All band members must provide their own crew-length black socks, black dress pants, and black shorts (non-athletic), and must purchase marching shoes from the band.
Beginning in your second year as a Spirit of Stony Brook member, you will be eligible to apply for one of four annual scholarships.
