Conceptual Framework

Every part of the student's experience affects his/her learning and development. It is widely recognized that learning happens not only in the classroom and the laboratory, but throughout all aspects of the student's life. For some of the student's life outside the classroom, we are intentional about the impact of our programs, policies and procedures in terms of learning and development, although we do not consistently identify the intended outcomes of all of those interventions.

We have the opportunity to enhance the impact of the student's experience at Stony Brook by expanding our sphere of influence, planning from the perspective of intended outcomes of learning and development, and assessment of the impact of our efforts. The Division has undertaken a major initiative to reshape programs, policies and procedures from the perspective of identifying intended learning outcomes associated with our efforts, and will assess the success of these efforts through quantitative and qualitative measures.
