MA in Liberal Studies as of Fall 2017 FAQ
We are changing the program because we want to make the program better for our students and to reflect contemporary needs of the workplace in our changing world. We believe that all Liberal Studies students should be able to demonstrate certain core competencies upon graduation. By requiring all students to take the same 4 foundations courses, we can ensure that every student graduating from the program is prepared for the workplace or further study in any advanced profession.
No, you are not required to take any of the new LSF course; however, we would encourage you to do so. These are exciting new courses that will provide you with the opportunity to become a more effective professional, no matter what your profession. In addition, these courses can be used to satisfy the AHLS or SBLS requirements for students admitted prior to Fall 2017.
Yes, you are allowed to take the new LSF courses. In fact, you are encouraged to do so.
Yes. The new LSF courses can be applied to your Liberal Studies Core requirements, so you can follow the new requirements. You would take one less course in your thematic concentration.
Students who are interested in both an AGC and the MA in Liberal Studies can work with the program director to develop a course of study that will meet the requirements of both programs.
No. You will need to follow the program requirements as of the date that you are matriculated. You will need to follow the new requirements.
Yes, excellent question! SPD now offers a variety of digital university badges that you may earn on your way toward an MA. There is no application, no extra fee or any additional work required. Simply take the required courses as part of your MA program, and when you have completed the appropriate courses for any of the University Badges, just email us at firstname.lastname@example.org , and we’ll send you directions about how to download your badge. In fact, you can earn more than one badge. Please visit our Badge Catalog to learn more about the badges we offer. In the meantime, we’re developing new badges, too.
