Marianna Savoca, PhD
As director of the Career Center at Stony Brook University, Marianna oversees a centralized
service for all students and alumni of all majors, class years, and career intentions.
The Center and its staff have received regional and
national awards and accolades for innovative and best practices in career development,
experiential education, diversity talent pipelining, employer
and alumni engagement.
Dr. Savoca began her career in higher education in institutional advancement, then shifted to career development. She has worked for Ivy League, small private, and large public institutions. Dr. Savoca is active in professional associations, including the National Society for Experiential Education, on whose Board of Directors she now serves, as well as the National Association of Colleges & Employers, the Eastern Association of Colleges & Employers, and the SUNY Career Development Organization. She is a member of the Advisory Committee for SUNY’s Applied Learning Initiative.
Dr. Savoca has consulted for college and university career centers domestically and
internationally. Her work has been recognized with a Fulbright Award for Administrators
in International Education, NSEE Rising Leader, NSEE Dissertation of the Year, and
the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Service. Dr. Savoca also
received an AAC&U Faculty Fellowship, and spent a sabbatical with the Business-Higher
Education Forum in Washington, DC. Research interests include experiential learning,
career development, and first-generation college student success. Her first book,
A Good Job: Campus Employment as High Impact Practice, will be published by Stylus in Spring 2018.
Dr. Savoca earned a BS from SUNY Binghamton, MS from Indiana University, and PhD in Higher Education Leadership from Colorado State University. She teaches HEA 528: External Relations in Higher Education and HEA 526: Career Counseling & The Psychology of Work.
