Spanish Language Awareness for Educators

Teachers, administrators, coaches, counselors, nurses, and school staff:Wouldn't it be a powerful enhancement of your professional skills to be able to communicate more effectively with parents and students whose primary language is Spanish? Given the rapidly growing number of Spanish-speaking families and children on Long Island and NYSED’s increasing requirements for ESL-related expertise, it is crucial that non-Spanish-speaking educators develop stronger knowledge of Spanish language and culture.

This two-course sequence is designed to enhance educators' understanding of the language and culture of Spanish-speaking students and families. Participants will learn the basic structures of Spanish Language and will learn vocabulary and phrases that are particularly relevant to K-12 school contexts.

Scheduling
The courses are scheduled in two formats:

  • 3 hours, one weekday evening per week for 8 weeks, or
  • 4 hours per day for 6 consecutive Saturdays

Courses are offered at the Stony Brook University main campus.  See dates and times below.

Spanish language badgeUniversity Badge
The entire curriculum is covered in two 24-hour courses. Each short course offers a significant professional enhancement; those who successfully complete the entire two-course sequence will earn a University Badge in Spanish Language Awareness for Educators. The University Badge may be displayed on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter profiles, and added to a resume to bring visibility to your achievement at Stony Brook University.
