SoMAS, Geosciences Take to the Road in the EarthBus

Biobus extStony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) and the Department of Geosciences in the College of Arts and Sciences have helped create an “EarthBus Partnership,” an alliance aimed at increasing the diversity of student participation in geosciences.

Biobus intThe National Science Foundation (NSF) funded project targets earth science students and teachers at the middle and high school levels, and community college students. The project goal is to train 2,500 high school students, 120 earth science teachers and 50-60 community college students over the life of the project.

Led by SoMAS Professor Kamazima Lwiza, the project will be working with the established BioBus group. SoMAS faculty and students gave a tour of the BioBus, which was on campus this week.

The EarthBus Partnership will recruit and mentor students at high schools with large populations of underrepresented students, bringing awareness of geoscience careers as fulfilling employment paths in private industry, government service and academia.
