New York Climate Exchange Town Hall, Celebrations April 25
Stony Brook University will host a special Town Hall and three campus celebrations on Tuesday, April 25, to mark the creation of the New York Climate Exchange on Governors Island in New York City.
The Town Hall will take place at noon at the Charles B. Wang Center Theatre, and will be livestreamed at stonybrook.edu/live.
Stony Brook alumnus Craig Allen ’79, chief meteorologist for WCBS-880, will moderate the Town Hall, which will include President Maurie McInnis, Associate Dean for Research and Associate Professor Kevin Reed of the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, and Associate Vice President of Campus Planning, Design and Construction William Herrmann. The panel will answer questions about the Climate Exchange in a Q&A format.
The Town Hall is free and open to the public. Closed captioning for the livestream is also available.
Three celebrations will immediately follow at 1 p.m. on the Academic Mall on West Campus, the lobby of the MART building on East Campus, and at Duke Lecture Hall at Stony Brook Southampton. The Town Hall will be livestreamed at the MART and Southampton locations, which will also include refreshments and succulent plant giveaways.
The West Campus celebration will include a tree planting and dedication. The Native Americans of the Manhattan region, the Lenape, referred to what is now known as Governors Island as Paggank (“Nut Island”) after its plentiful hickory, oak, and chestnut trees. As a nod to the island’s history, an original Governors Island nut tree species known as the Shagbark Hickory (Carya Ovata) was indentified, and a tree of that species will be planted on the grass field at the top of the Staller Steps closest to the Academic Mall.
