“Larry Swanson Waste on Wednesdays” Webinars Start April 7

In conjunction with Stony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS), the Evan R. Liblit Memorial Scholarship Fund Committee is hosting “Larry Swanson Waste on Wednesdays,” — a four-part free seminar series examining the management of solid waste on Long Island that is being held in honor of the late Larry Swanson, former associate dean of SoMAS. The first webinar in the series will be held on Wednesday, April 7, from 12 pm to 1 pm.

The management of solid waste generated on Long Island is an important issue and has significant ramifications on the economy and the environment. Each seminar series will allow participants to learn about various solid waste and recycling issues across Long Island. Topics will include latest developments, legislation and other issues critical to managing our solid waste. You will also will get the perspectives of local government and learn what municipalities and companies are doing to meet these challenges. The series will provide excellent insight and perspectives and will benefit all those who work in the fields of environmental protection, recycling, and waste management, or anyone would like to better understand these issues.

Webinar 1: Waste 101
This presentation will provide the audience with an overview of waste management practices across the Unites States with a more focused review of Long Island. It will review the “problem” — specifically, each person produces 4.6 pounds of waste each day — and also the types of wastes that people and businesses generate (including auto fluff, construction and demolition waste, medical waste, hazardous waste, municipal solid waste, ash, etc.). In addition, the webinar will cover where waste comes from, where it goes and how it gets there. The audience will also learn about the various waste management techniques including waste reduction, recycling, incineration and landfill disposal. Other topics that will be discussed include how waste is collected, transferred, transported and disposed both on and off Long Island. Speakers: Will Flower, Vice President of Winters Brothers, and Mike Englemann, P.G., Solid Waste Coordinator, Town of Smithtown.
