Dear Alumni and Friends,
Greetings from the Department of Sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences at Stony Brook University!
We are excited about the start of the new academic year! We hope that by beginning
a new tradition of sending out these e-newsletters, we can better keep you informed
of our activities. In this issue, we are highlighting some of the terrific members
in our Department.
 Over the last year, Associate Professor Crystal Fleming has been on a book tour promoting her latest book, How to Be Less Stupid about Race: On Racism, White Supremacy, and the Racial Divide. The positive publicity generated by her book and tour has led to additional media
attention for Professor Fleming, who was asked to comment on white nationalism and
racism for media outlets such as Newsweek, C-Span, France 24, and Aljazeera. She has also maintained her presence with op-ed
pieces in places such as VOX, Newsweek, The Root and Huffington Post. Building on this wave of success, Professor Fleming currently has three book projects
underway and will continue to publish and present in both academic and more mainstream
venues. We are privileged to have a faculty member who brings public acclaim to our
Department!
 Similarly, Aarushi Bhandari, one of our graduate students, recently received a National Science Foundation Doctoral
Dissertation Research Improvement Grant (NSF DDRI). This is an extremely competitive
and prestigious PhD grant, which allows Aarushi to complete her dissertation addressing
inequalities in accessing information and communication technologies across developing
countries. Of course, the NSF DDRI comes on the heels of many other successes – from
other fellowship wins, conference publications, and highly placed publications. Because
of her achievements and the critical topics she addresses, we expect she will have
much job market potential in the upcoming year. We also look forward to hearing about
and reading future research!
 Finally, junior sociology major India Pagan is not only a star basketball player,
but also a star sociology student. As a player for the Puerto Rican national basketball
team, she has had the opportunity to travel around the world and work with others,
as well as bring attention to and represent Stony Brook University. Most impressive
is that alongside her demanding basketball schedule, India continues to shine as one
of our top sociology students! After dedicating her time to a basketball career, she
hopes to use her sociology degree to work with kids, possibly as a social worker.
