Resolution Authorizing the Naming of the former Chemistry Building "Frey Hall"

WHEREAS, Dr. Robert Frey and his family have made exceptional personal and financial contributions to Stony Brook University for a period of more than twenty-five years, and in that his personal commitment and extraordinary generosity supporting students, faculty, the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and other University-wide and Presidential initiatives have had a major impact on campus; and

WHEREAS, Robert Frey received both his B.S. (1981) and his Ph.D. (1987) from Stony Brook University and his subsequent outstanding achievements in banking, artificial intelligence research, and quantitative finance for which he received the 2009 Distinguished Alumni Award bring recognition and distinction to the University and reflect the strength and excellence of a Stony Brook University education; and

WHEREAS, Robert Frey lent his expertise to the University as a Trustee of the Stony Brook Foundation between 2003 and 2009 and is currently a member of the Dean's Council of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences; and

WHEREAS, Robert Frey's deep connection to Stony Brook University includes service as an assistant professor in the Psychology Department in 1988, in the Education and Special Development Department in 1989, at the Institute for Pattern Analysis between 1990 and 2004 and as a Research Professor in the Applied Math and Statistics Department since 2004; and

WHEREAS,  Robert Frey and his family have generously established the Frey Family Foundation Endowed Chair in Quantitative Finance and the Robert and Kathryn Frey Scholarship in Applied Math and Statistics;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE STONY BROOK LOCAL COUNCIL, THAT:

In recognition of Robert Frey's uncommon leadership, deep commitment and generous philanthropy to Stony Brook University, the Stony Brook Local Council authorizes naming the renovated Chemistry Building, which is being transformed into a new state-of-the art Classroom Building of benefit to generations of future students,  as "Frey Hall" and furthermore,

The Stony Brook Local Council authorizes chair, Kevin Law, to transmit this resolution to the Board of Trustees of the State University of New York.
