Our Clinic

At the Relationship and Forensic Assessment Clinic (RFAC), we foster the bridge between clinical practice and critical research. All of our treatments are evidence-based and follow a cognitive-behavioral model. We see individuals and couples about relationship problems, and those problems frequently involve communication difficulties, lack of affection and intimacy, differences regarding parenting, and differences regarding roles. In all cases we see the partners individually for 1-2 sessions to conduct an evaluation of both individual and relationship problems. Then a treatment plan is developed with the partners. Depending upon the problems presented, the treatment plan may involve couple intervention or a couple intervention that follows some initial individual intervention. In such cases, the goal of the intervention is to assist the couple in having a more satisfying relationship.

We also see parents who are going through a separation or divorce and who want to minimize negative impact of the separation or divorce on the children. In such cases, there is an emphasis on the following: withholding criticism of the other parent in front of the children, not having the child convey messages from one parent to the other, making clear to the children that the separation or divorce is not their fault, assuring the children that both parents love them and will continue to spend time with them, and if possible, having each parent convey to the child qualities of the other parent which they respect. In some of the cases who are going through a divorce, we may provide therapeutic visitation when a child does not want to see the other parent.

We conduct forensic assessments for individuals or couples who are involved with the courts. In conducting individual assessments, the court may ask us to provide a mental health, substance abuse, or personality evaluation. In cases where a couple cannot come to an agreement with regard to custody of the children, we are often asked to assess the function of the whole family and especially the ways in which the parents and children interact. In addition, in such cases we may be asked to address the mental health of each parent, psychological or physical aggression, and substance abuse as these issues related to what may be in the best interest of the children. Such information is provided to judges when they are making decisions regarding child custody and visitation.
