Undergraduate College/University:  Purdue University

Major (Minor):  Brain and Behavioral Sciences (Biology)

Graduation Year:  2018

Hi everyone! My name is Olivia Wasserman and I grew up in Potomac, Maryland.

I graduated from Purdue University with a B.S in Brain and Behavioral Sciences and a minor in Biology. For many years, I have volunteered for the Armed Forces Foundation visiting physically and mentally injured soldiers at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. I assist and talk to soldiers who suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This experience is what sparked my interest in psychology and has inspired me to work towards a PhD or PsyD in Clinical Psychology and be able to treat those who are mentally ill.

My interest in treating mental disorders include behavior modification and therapeutic drug interventions in clinical settings where studies involving investigational medicines are performed. I wanted to gain an appreciation for clinical drug development, which led me to my internship with MedImmune-AstraZeneca, a biopharmaceutical company. After graduation, I worked as a Behavior Technician at a medical center called The Applied Behavior Center for Autism. I provided individualized one-on-one ABA therapy and implemented behavior intervention plans to children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). My research interests are focused on how stress and anxiety affect our mental health. I would like to dive deeper into the psychology of stress and anxiety and further understand the underlying cognitive processes involved and how they translate into abnormal coping mechanisms and/or certain mental disorders.

During my time in the MA program at Stony Brook, I hope to develop important and valuable research skills in the lab and gain more experience in a clinical environment. I want to expand my knowledge and learn more about the research, skills, and abilities involved in clinical psychology. After the MA program, I will apply to a PhD or PsyD program in an effort to become more qualified to analyze, diagnose and treat mental disorders.

I am very passionate about tennis and have been playing since I was very young. I love to be active and enjoy swimming and going hiking. I also love to spend time with my friends and family.
