Undergraduate College/University: Appalachian State University
Major (Minor): Psychology (Theatre Arts)
Graduation Year: 2019
Hi everyone! My name is Amanda Bianco.
I was born in Hicksville, NY and I moved to Charlotte, NC when I was a child. In spring of 2019 I graduated from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC with a B.A. in Psychology and a minor in Theatre Arts. In undergrad, I completed research to fulfill honors requirements where I wrote a thesis in the area of Clinical Psychology. In working on my research, I developed a passion for suicide prevention and mental health awareness. My thesis focused on the evaluation of a suicide prevention training program called CALM (Counseling on Access to Lethal Means), where we trained gatekeepers on key principles within suicide prevention and means reduction.
In addition to conducting research in the area of suicide prevention, I was fortunate enough to intern in the university counseling center to develop a better understanding for how a mental health facility runs on a daily basis. Along with interning, I worked very closely with the counseling center as a Mental Health Ambassador on my campus, where we spread awareness and mental health resources to students and the outside community. Being a Mental Health Ambassador is very close to my heart, as there is a lack of resources for many individuals in rural areas, like Boone, and I hope that I was able to bridge that gap just a little in my short time there. Overall, my undergraduate career has truly shaped my interests and passions in the direction of mental health and being able to provide an outlet for those that are struggling.
After completing my masters degree at Stony Brook, I plan on pursuing a Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology so that I can become a practicing clinician in the areas I am passionate about!
Outside of school, I love working out and traveling! As theatre is also one of my passions, I love getting traveling to new places to see shows. I also love spending my days with the children that I taught at a child development center, they always brought me so much joy! Since I have been working with children for nearly seven years, I know that they hold a very special place in my heart and I hope to continue to work with that population.
