Updates on West Campus Academic Hiring Decisions

Dear Colleagues,

As I settle into my new role as provost, each day is a confirmation of how very grateful I am to be here. 
There are a variety of critical items on my plate, but none is more pressing than faculty and staff hiring decisions. Attracting top talent – and being able to retain them – is crucial to supporting the future growth and success of our university.
I am writing to let you know that we are close to announcing decisions for the upcoming hiring cycle for academic units on West Campus. We had originally planned to share updates this week. However, we are expecting additional information on our budget from SUNY on July 28, and this information will be a key determinant in the decisions we will make. I believe it is most prudent that we make these final decisions and share them after we have heard from SUNY.
With that in mind, I am sharing our current timeline.
  • July 28: SUNY action on new funding expected
  • July 29-August 1: Decisions shared with Deans
  • August 2: Deans notify their leadership including department chair; Senate Executive Committee is informed of hiring decisions
  • August 3: Academic hiring decisions are posted to the Office of the Provost website; Provost hosts West Campus faculty and academic staff budget forum at 11 a.m. to announce West Campus academic hires (to be live streamed and recorded)
  • August 4-5: Provost holds multiple office hours to discuss decisions with community members who sign up
 
I want to be clear: I understand how much even small delays can impact the success of our hiring. In future years, we will take additional steps to do all we can to make these decisions and announcements sooner. 
As President McInnis shared in her message to the community this month, we are in a more positive budget environment than past years, albeit one where financial constraints continue. Our financial picture has improved thanks to several initiatives, including the Strategic Budget Initiative and the multi-year, all-funds budgeting model. We’ve also had increased support from the state. These will allow us to make key investments in class availability for students, research support, faculty and staff recruitment, and business system enhancements.
We will send an invitation next week for the West Campus faculty and staff academic budget forum that will include more detail on how to attend or view the session via livestream. This will also include information on signing up for office hours. Thanks for your understanding and all you do for Stony Brook University.
