Proposal Development 

Proposal Development (OPD) promotes the advancement of university initiatives by supporting the development and preparation of highly competitive grant proposals. OPD is committed to providing Stony Brook's research community with a comprehensive suite of services to foster the development and growth of research activities. In addition to proposal management, our support services include identifying extramural funding opportunities, coordinating limited submission competitions, nurturing research collaborations, and connecting researchers to institutional resources. We also organize workshops and trainings in grantsmanship, coordinate external copy editing and graphic design services, serve as project managers for the proposal development process, handle the administrative requirements and manage a repository of sample grant proposal materials. Our team’s forward-thinking approach to research development provides faculty with tactical support for large-scale proposals, ensuring that they are aligned with sponsor funding priorities.

Genesis Mission Updates

  • The Genesis Mission’s National Science and Technology (S&T) Challenges list was recently updated. We encourage you to review the new S&T challenges, which include ones led by NIH and NASA for advancing American health, detection of biological threats, and space exploration. The Office of Strategic Research Initiatives team is identifying SBU’s research strengths that are responsive to these new S&T challenges, and are preparing to assist the research community, along with OPD and OSP, once a formal RFA is released. If you have Genesis Mission-related questions, please share them with OSRI at osri_ori@stonybrook.edu
  • NSF released a Dear Colleague Letter that encourages submissions to open solicitations in support of the Genesis Mission, particularly Leveraging and Building AI for Science, Building Foundations for S&T Challenges, and Growing Workforce and Capacity for AI in Science.
  • DOE SC is inviting the community to participate in a virtual town hall to inform an anticipated Genesis Mission Graduate Fellowship Pilot. University participants may submit speaking requests. The event will be September 24, 2026.

Benjamin Luft Collection of 9/11 Oral Histories Now Available Through the Library of Congress

The Benjamin Luft Collection of 9/11 Oral Histories contains 484 interviews of responders to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, and some of their family members, as well as photographs and manuscript materials documenting their experiences at the site. Dr. Benjamin Luft is the Director of the World Trade Center Health Program on Long Island, and the Edmund D. Pellegrino Professor of Medicine at Stony Brook University. He established a clinic for the treatment of responders soon after 9/11, which has evolved into a program that follows over fifteen thousand responders to the disaster and conducts extensive research that has resulted in significant findings on the pathogenesis of disease and new approaches to care of this patient population.

Request For Information: NIH Common Fund is Soliciting Ideas for NIH-wide Challenges and Opportunities

The NIH requests ideas for biomedical and behavioral research challenges and opportunities that may be of interest to the Common Fund. These ideas may inform activities to advance areas of science relevant to these challenges/opportunities, including, but not limited to, scientific workshops, pilot initiatives, and/or future Common Fund programs. NIH encourages idea submissions that may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • A critical challenge or exciting emerging opportunity in biomedical/behavioral research
  • Resources, tools, or knowledge that are needed to address the important challenge or opportunity
  • Scientific advancements or other factors that make addressing the important challenge or opportunity particularly timely
  • Critical challenges that small labs or research groups face with respect to funding, contracting, or navigating the regulatory landscape
  • Priorities from "Advancing NIH's Mission Through a Unified Strategy" and "Make Our Children Healthy Again Strategy.

Responders must also consider the potential impact on human health, and completed work products that could be accomplished in 5-10 years. Ideas should be concise; submissions should focus on broad concepts rather than detailed descriptions.
Deadline: Anyone who is interested in responding directly to NIH as an individual may submit the response form on the NIH web page by September 19, 2026.

Translational Research Funding Opportunity: Center for Biotechnology BioREACH Program

Applications are now open for the 12th BioREACH Award Program from the Center for Biotechnology, which provides $50,000 in translational research funding for Stony Brook faculty and postdoctoral researchers to generate the evidence needed to advance promising innovations to the next stage of development. BioREACH funds milestone-driven studies and welcomes biomedical innovations as well as platforms, tools, computational technologies, and other enabling technologies with the potential to contribute to solutions addressing unmet needs in health.

The Center for Biotechnology (CfB) has helped advance some of Stony Brook University’s most impactful biomedical innovations, among them the yeast two-hybrid system, Xiaflex®, ReoPro®, Oracea®, and 3D virtual colonoscopy. The CfB has supported more than 475 faculty-led translational research projects and contributed to 306 license agreements generating $51 million in royalty returns to the University.

Discovery Prize 2027

We are delighted to announce a call for proposals for the 2027 Discovery Prize, sponsored by the Stony Brook Foundation. This $200,000 prize will be awarded to a scholar in the STEM disciplines whose research project embraces risk and innovation—two cornerstones of scientific advancement.
Eligibility: An individual must be an early career faculty member who, at the time of application, has a tenure-track or non-tenure-track assistant professor level–appointment, or is no more than five years beyond tenure and promotion at the associate professor level at Stony Brook University (SBU). The proposed research project may emerge from a single discipline or may be interdisciplinary, involving multiple SBU faculty. The lead PI, however, must fit the eligibility criteria described above. The proposed work must be basic research that is discovery-driven, creates new knowledge, and has the potential for broad impact on society or the Stony Brook University community. Research that is primarily translational in nature (i.e., seeks to apply existing knowledge) or that has been funded in the past is not eligible.

2026-2027 Faculty Call for Proposals for the SUNY AI Platform Research Awards

This Call for Proposals invites researchers to submit a proposal for innovative research projects that leverage the SUNY AI Platform, a secure, enterprise-grade AI environment powered by Google Cloud. The goal of this initiative is to accelerate research and innovation across all disciplines by providing access to cutting-edge AI tools, infrastructure, and expert support. 
Eligibility: Principal Investigators must be faculty or research staff from a doctoral-granting SUNY campus. Collaborators from any SUNY campus are welcome.
Disciplines: Researchers from all disciplines—from engineering and the sciences to business and the humanities—are encouraged to apply.
Awards: Up to $50,000 in platform resources per project.
Resources: Awardees gain access to a comprehensive suite of resources, including:

  • Advanced computing GPUs (A100, H100, H200, B200 and GB200) and TPUs on Google's AI Hypercomputer infrastructure
  • Enterprise access to powerful AI models and tools like Gemini, NotebookLM, and the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform
  • Access to over 200+ Google and third-party AI models (including Anthropic’s Claude Model Family and open models like Gemma) through Model Garden
  • Technical consultation with Google Cloud experts and dedicated onboarding support

DOE Office of Science SCAC Facilities Subcommittee Community Town Hall

The SCAC Facilities Subcommittee has been charged with reviewing a summary of proposed facilities and upgrades, identifying any gaps, and, in a constrained budget environment, prioritizing the new or upgraded facilities that are most crucial to the needs of the nation for the next ten years (2026-2036). The Subcommittee invites the community to participate in a virtual town hall to help inform the development of a roadmap for DOE Office of Science investments and activities in major facilities. They also welcome written input from community members wishing to provide more detailed input. The Subcommittee is seeking input from universities, national laboratories, and the scientific user communities. 
You may make this input in two forms: Virtual Town Hall Speaking Request (due September 10, 2026) or Written input to the subcommittee (due September 15, 2026)

NIH RFI on Proposed Changes to Reporting Outcomes from Peer Review

The NIH has issued a Request for Information (RFI) on Proposed Changes to Reporting Outcomes from Peer Review, seeking input on proposed changes to the reporting of peer review outcomes. To implement the  Unified Funding Strategy announced in Nov. 2025, NIH proposes to report peer review outcomes as falling into one of three broad categories, determined by overall impact score: Most Competitive (based on the top 25% of final overall impact scores), Competitive (based on the 26-50% of final overall impact scores), or Not Discussed (scores >50%, or ND). Notably, NIH proposes to no longer release final overall impact scores and percentiles to PIs or NIH staff.
Deadline for submitting an individual response to NIH: Anyone who is interested in responding directly to NIH as an individual may do so. OR&I has prepared a document containing sample response text that can be used for individual submissions. Comments are due by October 13, 2026 at 11:59 PM ET.
