The Dr. W. Burghardt Turner Fellowship Program provides
support for outstanding graduate students from
historically underrepresented backgrounds and has
helped Stony Brook University produce more minority
doctorates than any other SUNY institution. The Stony
Brook WISE Program offers a variety of opportunities to
help women pursue their interests in science, math and
engineering. We can be proud of all these programs, but much remains
to be done. We will improve our graduation rates by
providing better academic advising and support for all our
students, expanding successful programs like EOP/AIM,
and making sure that necessary classes and sections are
available for every student. We will develop new online
and pedagogic resources to improve student success
in individual courses and shorten time to graduation for
additional students.

The diversity of our student body is one of our
core strengths. It is a source of pride and a strong
contributor to the outstanding academic, cultural and
social environment that defines our University. We will
continue to be a community that treats and respects all
individuals in the same manner regardless of race, color,
age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, national origin
or disability, and this will be reflected in our recruitment
and hiring practices and our retention and promotion of
faculty and staff. Stony Brook University is committed to
making the necessary investments to maintain and ideally
grow the diversity of our student body while developing
new programs to increase the diversity of our faculty and
staff; improving the environment on our campus; and
helping to provide the best role models and mentors for
our students.

 We will increase our investment in EOP/AIM and other
programs that are enhancing retention and graduation
rates to make them available to more students.

 We will continue to support and develop innovative
programs that can enhance the success of women
and minorities in STEM disciplines.

 We will continue to invest in programs to help
our returning veterans and address the needs of
nontraditional students.

 We will continue to invest in programs that increase
the understanding and appreciation of diversity and
foster inclusion on our campus and beyond.

 We will increase our investment of time and resources
into recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty and
staff, striving to make them more consonant with the
makeup of our student body.

 We will reach out to high-needs school districts to
share in the opportunities at Stony Brook University.

 We will work to provide more professional
development opportunities for faculty and staff,
committing to help them reach their full potential
at Stony Brook University.

 We will work with SUNY and other stakeholders to
secure an increase in the state allocation for SUNY and
Stony Brook significantly, with the goal of using these
dollars to improve our performance on key metrics,
such as experiential education and graduation rates,
while maintaining a tuition and fee structure plan that
provides extraordinary return on investment for our
students and their families.

Activities:  We will increase access to Stony Brook University by
a modest growth in enrollment and work to ensure
that classes and faculty are made available in the
time and manner that meets student needs so our
infrastructure can support the increase. We will
continue our work to ensure the quality of incoming
students and to improve their graduation rates.

 We will look to develop new admission reading
techniques to ensure less reliance on standardized
test scores so we do not overlook those students for
whom this measure is not as reliable.

 We will continue to build a vibrant campus life that
focuses on strengthening a sense of belonging,
connection and community among our students.
