Interim Dean, School of Dental Medicine
Dr. Allan Kucine is Interim Dean of the School of Dental Medicine and has served as a faculty at Stony Brook University since 1990. Dr. Kucine received a BA in Biology from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a DDS from Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery. He completed the residency training program in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and is board certified in that specialty. Dr. Kucine has served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Information Technology, and Vice-Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the School of Dental Medicine. He has educated predoctoral dental students in oral and maxillofacial surgery, anesthesia, and medicine in both classroom and clinical settings, and has introduced innovative methods such as the use of high fidelity simulation. Dr. Kucine is a recipient of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Stephen H. Leeper Award for Teaching Excellence.
Dr. Kucine has led the School of Dental Medicine through two successful accreditation site visits and has served as a Curriculum Consultant to the Commission on Dental Accreditation for the past 20 years. He also served as project manager for a New York State Department of Health HEAL NY grant, through which the School was awarded $3.17 million. This funding supported a significant clinical expansion project in the Dental Care Center, as well as a Mobile Oral Health Services Clinic, which provides primary oral health care services to underserved populations in surrounding communities. Dr. Kucine has served as a faculty leader on the School of Dental Medicine’s outreach missions to Madagascar, bringing much-needed care to people of this island nation.
Dr. Kucine’s early research interests included the use of chemically modified tetracyclines in the management of diabetic wound healing. He is currently involved in translational studies in regenerative medicine and developing novel medical devices to improve the safety and efficacy of local anesthetic injections and to mitigate the spread of aerosol generated during dental procedures.
