Introducing Our New Chief Diversity Officer, Judi Brown Clarke

To All Faculty, Staff and Students,

I am delighted to announce that Judith (Judi) Brown Clarke, Ph.D., Diversity Director of the Bio-Computational Evolution in Action Consortium (BEACON) Science and Technology Center at Michigan State University, has been appointed Chief Diversity Officer (CDO), effective February 17, 2020. As CDO, Judi will guide the implementation of Stony Brook University’s Plan for Equity, Inclusion & Diversity and advance the overarching goal of building an inclusive Stony Brook community. She will serve on University Council and report to Chief Deputy Judy Greiman.

Overseeing senior management teams and diversity initiatives for more than 16 years, Judi brings a wealth of experience to this role. She is passionate about integrating diversity into workplace practices and universities, with expertise in reaching out to students, faculty, staff, and the community through successful workshops and learning modules. Judi received her B.S. in Audiology & Speech Science and an M.S. in Educational Administration from Michigan State University. She earned her Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration from Western Michigan University. Judi is a member of the Scientific Research Honor Society, American Indian Science & Engineering Society, and the International Women’s Forum. (Click here for more information about Judi.)

I would like to express my thanks to the entire search committee led by co-chairs Marjolie Leonard and Eduardo Diaz. I would also like to thank Dr. Jarvis Watson for his service as Interim CDO for the past year. He will join the Student Support Team in the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, effective January 21.   Jarvis is an inspiring leader who connected in meaningful ways with students, staff and faculty to advance the mission of the Office of the CDO.  He drove our successful SUNY PRODiG application, which resulted in over $957,000 in funding for new underrepresented minority and women in STEM faculty.  He also collaborated with the Faculty Student Association, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, and the Black History Month Committee to develop an historic opening ceremony for Black History Month that received the 2019 National Association for College Auxiliary Services (NACAS) Edwin R. Golden Award for Inclusive Excellence.  I deeply appreciate his efforts on our behalf.

Please join me in congratulating Judi Brown Clarke on her appointment as Chief Diversity Officer.

Michael A. Bernstein
Professor of Business, Economics, and History
