A Message from Maurie: First Edition

December 6, 2021

As we near the end of the fall semester, I wanted to say “thank you” to our entire Stony Brook community for your perseverance and commitment as our campus returned to more “normal” operations. Looking ahead to 2022, I plan to be in touch with you regularly and with greater frequency – both in person and through newsletters, blog posts, op-eds, videos, and more.

In my ‘Message from Maurie’ emails, I will share news, important events and perspectives, and I invite your input and feedback. You can send comments, questions, suggestions, etc. to mauriemessages@stonybrook.edu

I’m looking forward to continuing this journey together!

Exemplary Students: A Call to Action

Help us uncover candidates for the Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence, the highest honor bestowed on undergraduate students by the University. The deadline for nominations is January 7 and the details are on our Division of Undergraduate Awards webpage.

Our undergraduates are smart, driven and insightful – and we want to leverage our students’ talents, experience and wisdom as we work to fulfill the promise of this great institution. To that end, I am seeking nominations for the President’s Council of Student Advisors for the 2022-2023 academic year. Please share with me candidates who demonstrate leadership, ingenuity, intellectual capacity, and a deep commitment to the University as we tackle complex challenges and build the future together. The deadline is February 10. Find more details here.

An Incredibly Inspiring Story Showcasing SBUH’s Capabilities

It was all over local news. Take a look at how Stony Brook University Hospital’s life-saving surgery allowed a Long Island high school football coach to participate in the team’s championship game … just four days later.

Kudos!

Please take a few moments to see some great individual achievements, and SBU and SBM recognition, we can all be proud of. I will be spotlighting outstanding accomplishments such as these, and I welcome you to submit your suggested success stories to mauriemessages@stonybrook.edu:

April Masten received the American Historical Association's 2021 Eugene Asher Distinguished Teaching Award

Our Math professor Samuel Grushevsky was named a 2022 AMS Fellow

Chang Kee Jung won the American Physical Society’s 2022 Lilienfeld Prize

Stony Brook alumna Emily Carll ’20 was selected as Stony Brook University’s first-ever Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Program Fellowship recipient

The SBU College of Business earned AACSB International Accreditation

In addition, more than 100 Stony Brook Medicine physicians were named New York Magazine ‘Top Doctors’ for 2021. The list includes doctors from Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, and Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital. Their expertise spans across more than 45 different specialties, and they represent the top 10% of New York area physicians. Wonderful work everyone!

Speech-Language Pathology Program in Southampton

A new speech-language pathology program is a welcome and timely addition to our course offerings on our Southampton campus. Professionals in this significant area are essential to optimize speech rehabilitation and clinical care, which is especially needed as we work to treat patients who are still suffering from the lasting side effects of COVID.

Current Zuccaire Gallery Exhibit

As someone who has centered her studies on the nexus of art, history, culture and society, I’m particularly excited about the current exhibit at the Zuccaire Gallery, called Mis/Communication/Language and Power in Contemporary Art. It will be there through the end of February, so I hope you can carve some time out for a profound and eye-opening artistic commentary on the censorship of foreign languages and dialects. Also at the Gallery during this timeframe is a fascinating exhibit called Printing Solidarity: Tricontinental Graphics from Cuba, featuring global printed materials by the Organization of Solidarity with the Peoples of Africa, Asia, and Latin America (OSPAAAL), a cultural collection of artists and designers founded in 1966 in Havana. Enjoy!
