Statement from President Stanley on Proposed Changes to Title IX
The federal Department of Education has announced proposed changes to Title IX rules and regulations governing how colleges and universities respond to allegations of sexual misconduct. Stony Brook University currently follows New York State's stringent Title IX laws and procedures and has a well-defined process that safeguards the rights of all parties. Some of the proposed changes could weaken these protections.
We are serious about keeping our students safe and free from sexual and gender-based violence. Over the last several years, we have made tremendous strides in educating the campus community about Title IX rights and reporting options and have a commitment to investigating all complaints.
We are paying close attention to the federal process and will make mandated adjustments once any federal changes are finalized. However, we will remain committed to having a robust process that protects the rights of the parties and supports our goal of having a campus free from gender-based violence.
