An Inauguration Follow-Up Note

November 1, 2021

On Saturday, October 23, I had the great honor to be inaugurated as the sixth president of Stony Brook University – one of the most innovative public research universities in the world and an institution that I am proud to lead into a luminous, ambitious future.

I was truly humbled to be surrounded by colleagues, students, faculty, staff, community members, and numerous government officials who attended the Inauguration Ceremony, both in-person and virtually.

I was equally thrilled to join with the campus community the week prior for a host of events that showcased our richly diverse cultural contributions, as well as spotlighted the contemporary problems that we must all work together to solve. As I’ve said before, Stony Brook has a profound history of meeting its cultural moment, and I look forward to the next generation of discovery and innovation.

At the Inauguration Opening Reception at Zuccaire Gallery on Monday, October 18, we celebrated the Dos Mundos photo exhibit and the stunning artwork of our illustrious faculty member Howardena Pindell. At a lecture and special art exhibit at the Wang Center, we took a hard look at the legacy of slavery and the significance of remembering our country’s history. And at the MART Auditorium on East Campus and the Simons Center on West, we held symposiums on health education and healthcare disparities as well as tackling inequality in higher education – bringing together experts across industries, institutions, and disciplines for in-depth discussion.

The energy, curiosity, and ambition around campus were palpable. And I believe this is a signpost for the road ahead, which I am delighted to travel with you on this journey toward even greater aspirations and accomplishments.

Please accept my sincerest appreciation for entrusting me with this leadership role. And please know, as I do, that our strength – yesterday, today, tomorrow, and far beyond – is in working together.

Thank you for your continued engagement and support.

Sincerely,
