Have you ever wondered how a molecule discovered in a lab becomes the life-saving medicine found on pharmacy shelves? This project-based course offers an immersive look into the complex ecosystem of drug development, bridging the gap between scientific discovery and real-world application. You will explore the vital intersection of biology, chemistry, medicine, law and business.
While the journey of a drug involves many stakeholders, this course places a primary emphasis on the "bench-to-bedside" process — specifically focusing on the advanced biology and chemistry required to design effective treatments and the industrial manufacturing processes used to produce them at scale. Students will gain a holistic understanding of how regulatory frameworks (law) and market dynamics (business) influence scientific innovation and public health.
By the end of the session, students will not only understand the molecular foundations of medicine but will also recognize the diverse career paths available within the global pharmaceutical industry.

Experiential Learning
This course prioritizes hands-on application and industry exposure to ensure students move beyond theoretical knowledge. Participants will engage in:

"Wet" Laboratory Investigation: Experience the precision of the lab firsthand through a specialized laboratory exercise designed to simulate pharmaceutical research and quality control.

Data Analytics & Modeling: Master the tools of the trade with two Excel-based group exercises. Students will analyze real-world data sets to solve complex problems related to manufacturing efficiency and clinical outcomes.

Industry Site Visits: The program culminates in an exciting field trip to two leading Long Island biotechnology hubs. Depending on the session, students will tour facilities such as PL Developments and Enzo Life Sciences (Nassau County) or Amneal Pharmaceuticals and ChemBio Diagnostic Systems (Suffolk County). These visits provide a rare, behind-the-scenes look at large-scale pharmaceutical manufacturing and the fast-paced world of clinical diagnostics.

Louis A. Peña
Louis Peña is the Director of the Life Sciences Innovation & Entrepreneurship (LiSIE) program and Advanced Graduate Certificate. LiSIE is a collaboration between the College of Business, the College of Engineering & Applied Sciences, and the Center for Biotechnology. Dr. Peña’s career spans biomedical research, technology commercialization, management, and education. He has worked with biotechnology startups and early stage companies. Author of 8 patents, his inventions led to a startup that progressed through preclinical and clinical development to exit by acquisition. As an Adjunct Professor, he has taught a variety of subjects ranging from science (biophysics, neuroanatomy, physiology) to management (HR, CRM, Healthcare Policy & Ethics).
