Packing List
All course reading materials will be provided by Pre-College Summer. PCS participants will have access to a laundry room and a community kitchen with a microwave in their residence halls. Limited toiletries may be available upon request, but participants should plan to bring their own.
Please review the following lists so you know what to bring to Stony Brook and what
to leave at home.
What to Bring With You
We recommend that all residential participants pack the following items for PCS:
- Hygiene and shower supplies: Toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, soap, medium and large sized towels, shower shoes, hair dryer, comb or brush, toiletries, cosmetics, etc.
- Clothing: Bring comfortable clothing for hot days and light jackets for cool nights (see below for more information on weather considerations). Athletic wear and sneakers are recommended to ensure comfort while walking around campus. Participants should also pack professional attire for the closing ceremony.
- Footwear: Be sure to bring comfortable shoes for activities and excursions.
- Bedding: Twin XL sheets, twin XL blanket, pillow and pillowcase.
- Personal academic supplies: Backpack and/or other bags, laptop and charger, cellphone and charger, headphones, pens, pencils, highlighters, etc.
- Additional resources: Snacks, extra spending money for gifts and incidental expenses.
- Medications: Any daily medications the participant takes with a self-locking medical bag.
- Please note: All medications must be self administered by the participant as Pre-Collegiate Summer staff is unable to assist with the administration of medications. Participants are not allowed, under any circumstances, to share medications with other participants.
- Health Insurance: It is required that each participant has US-based medical insurance while attending
the Stony Brook University Pre-College Summer Programs. Pre-College Summer does not
provide medical insurance or recommendations and cannot assist families in obtaining
medical insurance.
- Participants will need to bring a physical copy of their health insurance card while attending the program along with a debit or credit card for any co-pays they may encounter at urgent care or the emergency room.
Climate and Clothing
Individual tolerances for heat and cold vary considerably, so the following are merely guidelines. Participants from tropical climates may consider warm sweaters to be essential, even in summer, as most public buildings are air conditioned from May through September.
July weather in Stony Brook:
Temperature: 50-90 degrees Fahrenheit, 10-32 degrees Celsius
Clothing: Wear light clothing for hot days and light jackets for cool nights.
