Department of Biomedical Engineering
Sindhuja Tirumalai Govindarajan, who sometimes goes by Cindy, hails from India and is an engineer with a passion for medical imaging research. She is currently a PhD candidate in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, but her research keeps her in the Department of Radiology where she works under Dr. Timothy Duong. Her research interests are in developing and applying image processing algorithms and advanced statistical methods to investigate brain MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) in neurological disorders. Specifically, her dissertation focuses on deciphering the structural and functional changes that occur in the brains of young Multiple Sclerosis patients that accompany cognitive impairment. As a new mom, Sindhuja is also committed to establishing a support structure to help new and expecting mothers navigate graduate school effectively and land in the career of their choice. She has launched the SBU Grad Moms group in partnership with GWiSE (Graduate Women in Science and Engineering), and has co-lead the family focused PCLP sessions.
