Opening Weekend Traditions
New Student & Family Welcome Reception
Spring Semester Opening Weekend
New Student & Family Welcome BBQ
Fall Semester Opening Weekend
Guests are welcome to assist residential fall incoming students with move-in and attend the New Student & Family Welcome Barbeque right before Experience Stony Brook (Orientation Part II) begins in the summer. While students have mandatory events to attend for Experience Stony Brook, family and guests are not able to attend these events. This is a great opportunity for families to spend time with their student before the semester begins.
Please note that all attendees, including students, must purchase tickets.
The Out of State/ Out of Area Welcome Reception
Fall Semester Opening Weekend(By Invitation Only)
The Out of Area program hosts a welcome reception for fall incoming Out of Area/Out of State and International students and their families the night before traditional first-year move in. This reception includes dinner, a chance to mingle with university staff members, and allows for families to connect with families from outside the local area. Following the dinner, students are taken to a special students only program where they are matched with upperclassmen Out of Area mentors, with whom they are encouraged to connect with and attend events with throughout the year. If your student identifies with this population, encourage them to check their Stony Brook e-mail for further information and a formal invitation.
